Kathleen Hildreth, U.S. veteran and cofounder of military aircraft maintenance company, M1 Support ServicesKathleen Hildreth has been around airplanes since she was a child. Five decades ago, she watched her parents fly their Cessna 172 in their small hometown of Trenton, Michigan. After graduating from West Point, she flew helicopters for the military for five years, but today she helps other pilots fly.
By the early 2000s, Hildreth had worked closely with quite a few small businesses and thought she was better equipped to service the federal clients than some of the entrepreneurs she had met in the government contractor marketplace. In 2003, while employed at global defense giant DynCorp—currently owned by billionaireCerberus Capital Management—she and a colleague, William Shelt, partnered to start their own company.
Most of M1 Support's revenues come from maintaining military aircraft including F15s, F16s, and A10 Thunderbolts fighter jets.The duo cofounded M1 Support that year in Denton, Texas and grew it from 2 employees to over 6,500 worldwide. Shelt is the president and focuses on contracts and security while Hildreth serves as the managing director of M1 Support and oversees the financials of the company.
Her roles as an owner and an executive at M1 Support make Hildreth a standout in the industry. Although four of the top five defense contractors are led by women , fewer than one in ten executives in the aerospace and defense industry are women and less than one in four field employees, according to a 2018 study by. Fewer still have equity stakes in these businesses.
There is plenty of room for more entrepreneurs like Hildreth and Chen in a field like government contractors. “It is hard to be what you can’t see,” says Tara Murphy Dougherty, who is the president of the National Security Practice at Govini, a data and analytics firm. “As women serve as role models and we see them being successful and doing things we previously only saw men do, that is attracting more young women to the field.
