Dr. Suleman Lelani, D-Sugarland and Rep. Jon E. Rosenthal, D-Houston join in the Texas Muslim Capitol Day at the State Capitol, Tuesday, March 7, 2023. It is the 20th anniversary of the event that is held to lobby the state legislature.

State Reps. Salman Bhojani, D-Euless, and Suleman Lalani, D-Sugar Land spoke to the crowds that had come from Austin, Dallas and Houston, including many high school students who were visiting the Capitol for the first time.that would stop state-mandated testing on religious holidays, add optional state holidays and clarify that all faith leaders can officiate marriages.

“We can celebrate as much as we want to that now we have a seat at the table, but what are we going to do with that if we are not going to be enaged?” Lalani said. “This is the time to be engaged, learn about the bills, and whenever the election happens, go and vote.” The tranquility of the event was a stark contrast to 2015 when a small handful of demonstrators shouted hateful messages at the attendees.
