These Beautiful 'Thread And Needle' Cakes Inspired By Fabrics Are Both Personal And Nostalgic

Leslie creates these beautiful works of art, inspired by textured fabrics. She tells BuzzFeed she developed what she calls her “thread and needle” technique a few years back when her niece was turning 1.The theme for the birthday party was “Eva’s First Fiesta.” She says, “I knew that I wanted her cake to be colorful and festive to pay homage to our culture while avoiding the stereotype.”

The inspiration for her “tapestry cakes” comes from all kinds of textured fabrics and crafting, like cross-stitch, needlework and embroidery patterns.“I’m really loving what fabric artists are doing now with their crochet, weaving and macrame. I’d love the opportunity to explore some techniques to recreate those gorgeous textures.”

Once she debuted her “thread and needle” technique, brides starting asking her to replicate details from their wedding dresses. It was the perfect personal touch. She says, “The technique has really evolved since I first started!” Sometimes a client asks for embroidery with certain colors or details that have special meaning to them.Maybe a particular stitching reminds them of something their mother wore, for example.

"It’s all very personal and nostalgic. And while I love the way the cake turns out, I think the sentiment is the most beautiful part."
