Three members who had voted for Jordan in the first two rounds switched on Friday.
On Friday, 25 Republicans voted against his candidacy – far more than the handful he could afford to lose given the party’s narrow majority in Congress. A speaker needs a majority of the full House to be elected.
On Tuesday, 20 Republicans chose a candidate other than Jordan, and on Wednesday the number rose to 22. Three members who had voted for Jordan in the first two rounds switched on Friday: Marc Molinaro, of New York; Tom Kean, of New Jersey; and Brian Fitzpatrick, of Pennsylvania.voted for Jordan on all three ballots. The exception, Doug LaMalfa, voted for former Speaker Kevin McCarthy on the first ballot and Jordan on the second and third.
Besides ousted speaker Kevin McCarthy, another of the California delegation got a vote: Mike Garcia, from Santa Clarita, was chosen on all three ballots by Jake Ellzey of Texas. The House remains effectively frozen, as it has been without a speaker for two weeks after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster.
