'They don't get much bigger than this one': Massive American eel washes up on a Texas beach

"I found the eel last week when I was doing my normal weekly beach survey, where we look for stranded sea turtles and count birds on the beach," said Jace Tunnell, the Mission Aransas Reserve director."It was laying in the high tide line on Mustang Island."posted on Monday by the research facility, Tunnell is seen holding the 4-foot long eel. The species can grow to be around 5 feet long, but most people see them around 2 to 3 feet long, Tunnell said.
American eels usually live in rivers and estuaries; however, the species has been nearly"wiped out," Tunnell said. They are currently listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. The construction of dams has prevented the species from migrating upstream.
