After seeing their friends and peers struggling with food insecurity, Makayla Williams and Alexis Wray founded MarketBoxx to combat food insecurity on college campuses ⤵️
with limited access to fresh, healthy food. “We saw it so closely with our friends, like our close friends,” Williams says. “Every day, they battled with food insecurity.”
Since launching, Market Boxx has organized drives at several other colleges, including nearby UNC Greensboro, and other HBCUs in the state, such as North Carolina Central and Johnson C. Smith universities. After graduating, Williams moved to Texas for work and MarketBoxx’s operations came with her. She recently set up a drive at Houston’s Texas Southern University. “Our overall goal is to hit every HBCU,” Williams says.
you went to A&T, there’s an HBCU community, and so I think that’s also been really beneficial when it comes to serving other institutions outside of A&T,” she says. “We’re always asking ourselves, What would make sense for a college student?” Wray says. “Like we see, ‘Oh, they have a big sale on rice.’ Okay, but how can a college student cook rice with just a microwave and a refrigerator?”
