State cited 15 “one-star” ranked nursing homes have failed to improve for years, but have not faced any significant consequences.

He said his office was “seeking to shine a light on the kind of care” residents are receiving at facilities that are being hit with violations year after year, calling the threat to restrict Medicaid payments “massive leverage the state can and should use.”that allows the public to track New Jersey nursing homes — along with other long-term care facilities such rehabilitation centers — that are repeatedly rated one-star and receive Medicaid funds.

Walsh said his office did not contact any of the facilities, but relied on publicly available data to do its analysis. NJ Advance Media is reaching out to the 15 nursing homes cited and awaiting responses. According to the comptroller, nearly half — 45.2 % — of one-star nursing homes nationally have been cited for an “immediate jeopardy” violation. In comparison, just 0.1 % of five-star nursing homes have received such a citation. Five-star is the highest ranking. One-star, or “much below average,” is the lowest.

She told reporters the state has taken a number of reform steps, including legislation to require minimum staffing ratios and the disclosure of financial information by nursing home operators to show the ownership trail of such facilities. But more needs to be done, she added.
