Rockets’ Stephen Silas, NBA counterparts agree that coaching through a rebuild has its fun side
Second-year coach Stephen Silas says he has grown more patient while presiding over the Rockets’ rebuild.From the start of the season, it seemed Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was not just accepting the change that had inevitably come to his team over the years. He was enjoying it.
“It’s a different dynamic in teaching,” Popovich said early in the season. “You start at a different level, probably a little bit more fundamental level with a lot of the young guys, especially when a lot of them were one or two years in college. So spending some time on the basics, creating habits that win, and becoming aware of habits that will help you lose is important.
Though the potential for franchise shifting change existed, Silas was hired to coach a contender. Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups similarly saw his team dramatically altered by trades and injuries. But he said coaching players on 10-day and two-way contracts has been “pretty cool.”
