It’s hard to drive past the moonscape of rubble that is the old Valley View mall site and not despair. But we are here to tell you to have hope. There is some movement on redeveloping this area into the vibrant part of our city it deserves to be.
Much of this is local government investment, and some of it is successfully drawing in a larger number of foreign trade groups that are adopting this area according to its rebranding as “the International District.”The entire district is considerably larger than the Valley View site. It’s bounded on the west by the Dallas North Tollway and on the east by Preston Road. To the north is Southern Boulevard. The southern boundary is Interstate 635.
Council member Jaynie Schultz has been an evangelist for redevelopment of the area and calls it “Uptown 30 years ago.” Schultz is right, though, when she says there is lost trust in seeing the area redevelopment because of the years the Valley View site has stagnated. The reasons are complicated,Our effort to reach Beck Ventures, a large property holder and onetime champion of a grand redevelopment, was unsuccessful this week.
Despite all the trouble, we are confident that public investment in this area is going to bear fruit over time. It’s frustrating that it is taking so long. But this part of Dallas is too good to remain a mess. We just hope those with a stake in the ground recognize it sooner rather than later..
