A couple whose car fell 300 feet into a rocky canyon survived not just with a lot of luck, rescuers said, but likely also thanks to a new iPhone feature that immediately alerted first responders to the crash.
A rescue helicopter responded to Tuesday's incident in the Angeles National Forest.
Luckily for the couple, Cloe Fields said she had recently switched her phone's service provider and got an upgrade to the iPhone 14, which she was thankful to learn came equipped with aEven before she and her boyfriend tried to call 911, which probably wouldn't have been possible from their location, her phone had alerted local emergency responders of their crash and location.
"The car lost traction," Fields said."The back of the car did a whole 180 on us, and next thing you know we're falling backwards down the mountain." "That information allowed us to get the rescue helicopter," Gilbert said. He said the satellite information from the iPhone provided the latitude and longitude of the crash, and the rescue helicopter was able to quickly spot the vehicle and couple.Fields said they were both airlifted to a hospital, and after many tests, doctors confirmed their initial evaluation — neither had major injuries.
