Award-winning company aims to relaunch as a nonprofit theater company no later than February 2024, will keep its name and will continue producing at center
Just six months after CCAE Theatricals won the two top prizes at the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle’s 2022 awards ceremony, the 3-year-old theater company is taking a break to relaunch as an independent nonprofit, after losing its status as the California Center for the Arts, Escondido’s in-house theater producer.
In an interview last weekend, Lapp said that starting over will be a lot of work over the next several months as they secure their 501 status and line up the foundations and donors needed to sustain the company for a relaunch. But Lapp said he and Beck are confident that this will ultimately be a positive move for the company’s long-term future.
Also moving from the center with CCAE Theatricals are conservatory director Tom Abruzzo, the director of education and engagement, and Julianna Crespo, who is stepping down as CCAE’s director of performing arts to become executive director of CCAE Theatricals. CCAE Theatricals just completed its second season with the world premiere musical “Bottle Shock.” Its third season was scheduled to begin Dec. 1 with the musical “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas,” but Lapp said he’s not sure whether the company will have fully re-established itself in time to make that production a reality. However, he said, the company will definitely be ready to produce the season’s second show, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” in February.
