Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks fights for a rebound against Jakob Poeltl and Devin Vassell of the San Antonio Spurs in the first half at American Airlines Center on April 10, 2022 in Dallas.DALLAS — The Spurs went to Dallas for the regular-season finale and took care of business, coming away with a 130-120 defeat that — in the long run — was tantamount to victory.
That will give them the ninth-best lottery odds in the June draft, assuming they don’t advance from the play-in tournament to the playoff bracket. Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with 24 points, his ninth consecutive game with at least 20. Josh Richardson added 28 off the bench, while All-Star guard Dejounte Murray came back from a five-game hiatus due to illness and scored 17.
But Murray finished with 17 points and seven assists, made all six of his free-throw tries and was active on defense with three steals. Give a special shout out to Pinson, the Mavericks’ unlikely savior after Doncic’s departure. The little-used guard, who had totaled 32 points in 18 appearances this season, poured in 16 in the second half to help keep the Spurs at bay.
Should the Spurs lose either Wednesday in New Orleans or in the second play-in game at either Minnesota or the Los Angeles Clippers, they would enter the NBA draft lottery with the ninth-best odds.
