Richmond barbecue joint The Swinging Door to close this weekend after 50 years
thanking the community and saying he is ready to move on to another chapter of his life. The barbecue joint will close Sunday, May 14, with an auction following June 17 and 18.
"Being a huge part Fort Bend County the past 50 years I want to give a big THANK YOU to all of our wonderful customers, customers that became friends, friends that became family and especially all my employees throughout the years that created the backbone of this establishment," Onstad wrote. Onstad has lived in Richmond since he was a child. When his family moved there from Houston, his dad bought real estate in an area of farms and cattle ranches. His family got word that a big suburban development was going in across the road from some of their land. As an adult, Onstad built an 800-square-foot building he thought would become a furniture store to service the new neighborhoods popping up.
But the new development fell through and he had to find something else to do with the building. A barbecue joint wasn't on Onstad's mind until he said a local farmer popped in asking for a barbecue sandwich. Onstad said,"Come back in two weeks."The Swinging Door in Richmond is closing its doors this month after 50 years.Having not owned a barbecue restaurant before, Onstad faced some trials and tribulations early on.
