The Majority Leader announced plans Monday to vote on changing the Senate’s filibuster rules in response to the GOP’s “anti-democratic push.”

a commission to investigate the January 6 attack on Capitol Hill, that “Democrats have agreed to everything they asked for” and they still opposed it. But he’s apparently never reached the point that he would reconsider his firm support for the Senate filibuster rules as they currently exist.

After a year of spinning their tires on voting rights, Democrats are mounting a renewed push to pass voter protections, something that will, at the very least, require a carve-out in the filibuster rules. At no point has Manchin given real reason to believe that he’d back anything that would weaken the Senate procedure. “If the right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy,” wrote Schumer, “then how can we in good conscience allow for a situation in which the Republican Party can debate and pass voter suppression laws at the State level with only a simple majority vote, but not allow the United States Senate to do the same?” For this reason, he added, “We must adapt. The Senate must evolve, like it has many times before.
