In the new documentary, ToniMorrison: The Pieces I Am, the famously private writer recounts precious memories from her legendary life:
Greenfield-Sanders found himself wishing he could make full-fledged documentaries about many of his subjects—but Morrison was his first and most urgent choice. He reached out to her a few years ago; the author, who is typically very private, eventually agreed to sit for several interviews with the director around 2016 and 2017.
The film also includes interviews with numerous people close to Morrison, including Winfrey and Lebowitz. Visually Morrison’s narrative in the doc is embellished with or illustrated by original work from a number of contemporary artists; artistfor example, assembles a collage of Morrison in the film’s opening moments. No matter whom he reached out to for this project, Greenfield-Sanders noted, everyone said yes almost instantly.
The director reckons he got about 20 hours’ worth of interview footage of Morrison, much of which naturally doesn‘t make it into the two-hour documentary. “There’s so much rich material that’s not in the film,” he said.
