Ann Lowe, the sought-after designer behind Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress, created a gown that has lived on in history—though her name was lost for decades.
Roelse meticulously studied the “modernized Southern Belle” silhouette down to the S-shaped “wiggle bones” in the complex corset and the on-the-bias panels. She alsoa blue ribbon concealed under the skirt at the hemline, perhaps celebrating the age-old wedding proverb.
As impressive as it is today, the wedding gown almost didn’t materialize. Two weeks prior to the ceremony, and after two months of hard work, Lowe’s atelier flooded. Jackie Kennedy’s wedding dress was destroyed, along with the bridesmaids dresses. The designer, at her own expense , purchased new fabrics and assembled an emergency seamstress team. Unbeknownst to her high profile clients, Lowe recreated the collection in just 10 days.at least 250 hours to sew the dress.
While delivering the gowns on the wedding day, Lowe was directed by Auchincloss estate staff to use the service entrance.
