Engoron, who issued the ruling, “deranged,” and accused New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, whose office brought the case, of being a racist.
Before being elected, in 2018, James called Trump a “con man” and promised to direct a “bright light into every dark corner of his real-estate dealings.
On this basis, Engoron rejected the Trump team’s request to dismiss the case and granted the attorney general’s motion for partial summary judgment—a decision made without a full trial—on the claim that Trump and the other defendants were liable for fraud under Section 63. The Trump documents “clearly contain fraudulent valuations that defendants used in business, satisfying OAG’s burden to establish liability as a matter of law against defendants,” Engoron wrote.
