Star Ben Platt dishes on The Politician’s “black-hearted humor”
Dear Evan Hansenfranchise, plays the titular politician: Payton Hobart, a smart, ruthless, overachieving, high school student in Santa Barbara, California, who dreams of becoming president of the United States. To accomplish his goal, he believes, he must first be accepted to Harvard—the university that has produced the most number of U.S. presidents. And in order to do that, he needs a spectacular list of extracurricular activities to boost his application.
“This idea of authenticity versus fake authenticity is really what the show is about. It’s a really fascinating idea, especially with everybody on social media,” explained Platt.
“My character is not perfect, but he’s sort of like a conscience—a voice of clarity and calm, unlike everyone else,” said Corenswet. “In the first episode, you find out he is the only one who is really honest about his emotions and shares how he’s feeling. He’s able to do that with Payton. As the show goes on, everybody else struggles and connives, backstabs and plots against each other. He starts to lose it from following the idea of faking it until you make it.
