The Padres' Brent Honeywell continuing to work his way back from the four elbow surgeries that derailed the career of an arm once considered one of the best pitching prospects in the game

Brent Honeywell Jr. dressed quietly at his locker in the visiting clubhouse on Sunday afternoon. After buttoning his shirt, he nodded to a reporter waiting off to the side. The ensuing conversation about the change-up that— “I thought it was my best pitch; just hung it” — was brief because he’d already laid it all out a day earlier as he pondered where he was on his path back from the four elbow surgeries that derailed his career all those years ago.

If you’ve followed the developmental side of the game, there’s a good chance you know at least an outline of the story. You might know Honeywell was considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. You’d have heard about the four elbow surgeries that barred him from the mound for four years. You might’ve marveled at a clip of his screwball, just about the only one that’s existed in the pitch tracking era.

“There were many nights where I’d put my son to sleep … and we’d just sit out on the balcony and talk and work through things,” Sullivan said last month before he was optioned to Triple-A El Paso. “ … A lot of guys would have just hung it up. Mentally, for three of four years you’re just not in a game, knowing that before that you were the best. But give-up isn’t in his DNA. He’s, as he puts it, a “professional ball-mover,” and the tough part was not stepping on a mound every five to six days.

The Rays moved on from Honeywell, who was out of minor league options, after the 2021 season, trading him to Oakland for cash. A stress reaction in his elbow derailed that stint before it ever got off the ground. Honeywell was on his own in free agency the following winter when he packed his bags for the Dominican Republic to audition for his next employer.

But amid posting a 3.90 ERA over 32 1/3 innings out of the Padres bullpen, the flashes continue to intrigue.
