The Ocean’s 11 prequel will star Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, but their roles in Barbie, 2023’s hottest movie, have posed a major challenge. In 2022, Robbie was announced as the star of the Ocean's 11 prequel film set in Monte Carlo in 1962, and Gosling was announced as her co-star a few months later. The prequel will be directed by Jay Roach, who worked with Robbie on 2019’s Bombshell, and is set to begin filming at the end of June.

Barbie is bound to be a big hit, and Robbie and Gosling will be able to claim some responsibility for that, but it also places big expectations on them for the Ocean’s 11 prequel. Though little is known about the prequel, their roles will be a far cry from Barbie and Ken. Viewers will have their own perceptions about the on-screen pairing in the Ocean’s 11 prequel because of Barbie, which could actually end up hurting the prequel if it doesn’t match or live up to them.
With romance films in particular, it’s been shown that actors who have proven their chemistry in prior projects help draw an audience for future films. This was seen with 2022’s Ticket to Paradise after Julia Roberts and George Clooney had played love interests in the Ocean’s trilogy. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s films together also helped to market La La Land, as viewers knew they could expect great chemistry from the duo.
