Russian hockey star Alex Ovechkin, a vocal supporter of Putin in the past, has been hearing boos from fans and losing sponsors.
Ovechkin was loudly booed at New York City's Madison Square Garden during a Thursday match-up against the New York Rangers. Though he's never well-received by Rangers' fans, some sportswriters noted the response was noticeably more negative than usual in what was his first ice appearance since Putin ordered military strikes inside Ukraine.
Along with the financial losses the NHL could suffer, the league wrote in a Monday statement that it is worried about the safety of Russian players. The NHL has been experiencing some negative issues related to Russian star Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who has publicly supported Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past. However, the hockey star has been less supportive in his public comments about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
