'This is what Stalin dreamed about but never achieved,' former White House aide Sebastian Gorka told Conservative Political Action Conference attendees on Thursday, echoing a popular right-wing talking point about the proposed Green New Deal.
By Antonia Noori Farzan Antonia Noori Farzan Reporter for Morning Mix Email Bio Follow March 1 at 6:38 AM According to the latest attack line launched by some conservatives, supporters of the Green New Deal are waging war against one of our noblest and most treasured national institutions: the hamburger.
In light of Gorka’s comment , it seems important to point out that Stalin didn’t dream to take hamburger away from the Soviet people. He actually dreamed to introduce it—and did, after Food Comissar Mikoyan returned from the US in 1936. pic.twitter.com/V47rbhArnW During an appearance on Showtime’s “Desus & Mero” last week, Ocasio-Cortez clarified once again that no one would be forced to go vegan under the Green New Deal. But there was a legitimate need to “address factory farming,” the freshman congresswoman added. “Maybe we shouldn’t be eating a hamburger for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” she said. “Like, let’s keep it real.”
The next day, while speaking at CPAC, Rep. Mark Meadows joked that the Green New Deal would at least be good for Chick-fil-A’s stock, since getting rid of all the cows would result in people eating a lot more chicken. It all added up to literal red meat for the base — and any hamburger-loving Americans.
