For almost half a century, the portrait photographer N. V. Parekh captured the middle classes from Mombasa, Kenya and other places along the Swahili coast.
In 1978, at the Mombasa portrait studio of the Indian Kenyan photographer N. V. Parekh, a client named Mrs. Uweso decided to celebrate her pregnancy by posing for a head shot. Uweso and her husband were regular patrons of the Parekh studio, and amassed a collection of images that were framed and displayed on the walls of their bedroom. In this particular photo, she is wearing earrings and a heart-shaped necklace, her head is tilted to the side and her eyes lined with kohl.
Where earlier portrait photographers treated their African sitters as silent curiosities for outside audiences, the Parekh studio made portraits for the pleasure of the subjects themselves. His clientele represented an ethnically diverse cross-section of Mombasa’s bourgeoisie—an urban, largely affluent class that had benefitted from the city’s postwar prosperity and who took an interest in documenting their own lives.
