Palpatine used a deceptive Force power to enact his coup in the Star Wars prequels, but the Jedi also taught this ability to a Clone Wars-era Knight.
One of Palpatine’s most useful Force abilities in the Star Wars canon and Legends continuities was, surprisingly, used by Jedi before their destruction. Palpatine’s horrific fascist coup was gradually and methodically executed throughout the Star Wars prequel trilogy, with the Sith Lord hiding in plain sight using both his keen intellect and his dark side powers.
For decades, Palpatine used Force concealment constantly as he manipulated the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic itself into going to war with the Separatists and granting him emergency power long after his term as Supreme Chancellor expired. Palpatine frequently spoke to the Jedi Order’s leading members, often personally in his office, yet none felt his strength in the dark side, despite Palpatine being the most powerful Sith Lord in galactic history.
While Akuna’s use of Force concealment makes sense, given his position as a spy for the Republic, the fact that the Jedi Order taught him this ability is surprising, as the power is typically associated with the Sith and the dark side. Bode Akuna eventually fell to the dark side and became a double agent for the Empire, with the goal of protecting his daughter being the primary motivator .
Despite its famous use by Palpatine, Force concealment is not necessarily a dark side ability in and of itself. The ability is usually used by dark siders with malicious intentions, but Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Luke Skywalker’s uses of the ability in the Legends continuity were benevolent. If Force concealment was intrinsically a dark side ability, it would likely not have been taught to Bode Akuna in the first place.
