Private schools have been and will continue to be part of the American education landscape. The question for our time is, who will be able to attend them?
. Closing Catholic schools limits the options that low- and moderate-income families have. What’s worse, much of the positive research on Catholic schools occurred during a time when they were much stronger institutions. The weakening of Catholic schools risks attenuating these positive effects.
For the past several decades, the most notable tool for bringing down the cost for families has been private school choice policies. School vouchers, tuition tax credits and education savings accounts all help families afford private schools that they otherwise would not be able to. Microschools have the potential to be more cost-effective. By inhabiting smaller spaces, employing a smaller staff, using technology effectively, and relying on educational models that have fewer expensive bells and whistles, schools can operate at a lower cost.
