The future of Dallas is a warehouse | Opinion
Dallas is now a port city. It has finally overcome the obstacles that beset it dating back to its founding in the Jacksonian period, not by dredging the Trinity, but by maximizing its access to road, rail and air cargo. Across 7,500 acres in five municipalities, the International Inland Port of Dallas constitutes a significant regional strategic asset.
Over time, these companies may do additional business in the region, bringing additional investment and more corporate jobs. This is already happening. Dallas loves a winner — and I’m not writing in the third person. We are the best at this industry, and we must take advantage of our geographical blessing. Four major highways converge in the city along with a fifth interstate loop. Combine this with three major railroads, Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern and Burlington Northern Sante Fe, and Dallas becomes a chokepoint. The origins of Dallas’ drive for logistical prominence started in the post-World War II period.
The great champion of the Port of Dallas was Bill Blaydes, the Lake Highlands councilman. It’s the last time I can remember a council member in Dallas working on a project that was not based on his part of town. As is often the case with Dallas’ single-member districts, he was criticized in his own district for spending too much time on a nondistrict issue. Ironically, his successor, Jerry Allen, was lauded for his reform of the payday loan industry.
