Analysis: Until Dems — who aren’t Joe Biden — start regularly citing Obama’s achievements as proof that the power of government can be harnessed for the benefit of the common good, Obama’s legacy, and his political value to Democrats, will be diminished
In his 2016 presidential campaign, Sanders called out Obama by name for his “biggest mistake,” namely, trying to bargain with Republicans without keeping his grassroots supporters fully engaged. Last week, appearing onthe podcast hosted by veterans of the Obama White House, Sanders made the same point, but with more generosity toward Obama.
That desire to create distance from Obama doesn’t extend to all Democrats from the past. Harris is eager to say she, the first black woman elected to Congress and the first to seriously run for president. Buttigieg’s rejection of the “politics of the past” didn’t stop him from quoting Franklin Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” speech in his announcement. And Sanders routinely links his democratic socialist platform with Roosevelt’s New Deal.
Harris is one of the very few candidates who has taken the risk of criticizing Obama by name. At least, so far., who like Biden served in the Obama administration, threw a similar jab at Obama’s deportation record. But Castro trains his fire on Biden, not Obama: “I have learned the lessons of the past. It seems like Vice President Biden hasn’t.”
