The new emergency shelter comes after the City of Dallas launched its interactive dashboard centered on domestic violence crimes.

The Family Place honored the lives of two girls; nine-year-old Mary Faith and six-year-old Liberty Battaglia, killed by their father, John Battaglia, while visiting his home back in 2001. Per court records, the 62-year-old father made his daughter, Mary Faith, call her mother, Mary Jean Pearle, who heard gunshots ring out shortly after her daughter uttered, “no, daddy, please don’t, don’t do it.

The rollout of the dashboard and opening of the emergency shelter coincides with October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Gov. Greg Abbott declared this month asin the state, noting the importance of everyone coming together to eliminate the abusive behavior. “Tragically, millions of Texans have endured domestic violence, yet a brave but relative few seek family violence resources on a daily basis,” Abbott said. “A solemn duty befalls each of us to create a culture wherein the intolerable act of domestic abuse is decried and punished.”

“To purge domestic violence from our society, we must cultivate the values of love, kindness, and gentleness, and we must educate ourselves on both healthy behaviors within the context of close relationships and telltale signs of abuse.”
