While the Galactic Empire and their successor, the First Order, are famous for their planet-killers, they both overlooked one important superweapon.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Galactic Empire has a rare superweapon that would have ensured their victory in the Star Wars original trilogy and served the First Order just as well - but they chose to barely use it at all. Throughout both eras, the Empire and its successor state often find themselves chasing after Rebel and Resistance vessels, often ending with the heroic factions making a clever escape through hyperspace.
The Empire tended to focus on superweapons instead, using its vast resources to build nightmarish weapons and vessels - including the two Death Star battlestations. The First Order followed the Empire's lead, transforming the planet Ilum into Starkiller Base, another superweapon. But, ironically, one Imperial superweapon was neglected that could have been tremendously effective against the rebels.
The Legends continuity is now an alternate timeline, but it continues to inspire elements of the new canon. The Interdictor was brought into the current canon by Star Wars Rebels, and its signature gravity well projectors are every bit as effective as they were in the Legends timeline. Once the Interdictor’s projectors are activated, the only way Rebels ships can hope to flee is if they destroy the projectors, a task that can easily result in their destruction.
The First Order Would Have Defeated The Resistance With An Interdictor The First Order improved on the Empire’s vessels, employing larger and stronger Star Destroyers and TIE Fighters equipped with deflector shields, yet they do not appear to have any Interdictors in their fleet.
