The Detroit Pistons have been mired in mediocrity for an entire decade, hoping to remain competitive at the cost of rebuilding conventionally. Does the new management regime have the tools and vision to plot a course out of this morass?

While you're doing this, you aim to bounce back from the bottom by overachieving in future seasons through using both the promise of future glory alongside your new young star-in-the-making and your clean books to pay veteran free agents to join forces. Leuer accepted a 4-year, $41 million contract, largely because Van Gundy targeted the stretch-4 as a primary point of emphasis after Kevin Love carved up the Pistons from long range in their four-game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers in that solitary playoff series. Van Gundy spent the majority of Leuer's first season jamming him into roles in which he did not fit, and Leuer missed almost the entirety of last season with an ankle injury.

The Pistons missed the playoffs last season, going 39-43 and finishing below .500 for the third time in four years. Van Gundy was fired as both coach and president, and replaced by Ed Stefanski and a cadre of assistant general managers. Pachulia struggled in relief of Andre Drummond as the season wore on. The Pistons were a veritable dumpster fire when Jose Calderon was on the floor, to the point where if you completely take out his minutes , their overall net rating would have jumped from -.7 to +2.0 points per 100 possessions. That would jump them from the 19th-best net rating in the league to the 12th-best, simply by removing the minutes of their worst regular contributor.
