Doctor Who’s Daleks Were Originally ‘Little Blue Men’ Before They Were ‘Murderous Squids’ In the 1960s, a comic strip appeared in a British children’s magazine called TV Century 21, a comic strip that was titled The Daleks and was created by Terry Nation. These comic strips were later collected into a cohesive omnibus called The Dalek Chronicles that was published in 1994.
In both instances, the original Daleks were shown to be warmongering conquerors who didn’t care who they hurt so long as the conflict was won, even if it meant unwittingly turning themselves into unrecognizable monsters for the sake of victory.
Daleks certainly fit the criteria for humanity’s original paranoia surrounding the prospect of alien invaders, and their original depiction played into that classic aesthetic perfectly. However, the thing that’s the most startling for fans of Doctor Who is the obvious: Daleks used to be blue humanoid aliens with big heads and small bodies, a fun and weird piece of Doctor Who trivia that’s sure to blow every fan’s mind.
