Season five of TheCrown showcases an entirely new sartorial side of Princess Diana.
for season five sums that up. When I read the scripts, I had to find a handle on things. So it was thinking about what she would wear in that situation—being a hidden person, a private person. When she closes her front door, what happens? I remember we were talking to one of the directors about it, and it’s almost like a thriller when she leaves. It’s like a cloak-and-dagger operation and she’s in disguise. She wears baseball caps, big coats to envelop her figure.
Costuming Diana for the season also required a bit of armchair therapy—looking into what Diana actually wore on certain occasions, and imagining why she chose certain outfits for certain events. The new season also depicts some of Diana’s charity work—and Roberts, always striving to telegraph the trajectory of the character each scene, chose costumes that reflected the character’s role in those moments.
“There was kind of a tenderness to possibly a new relationship,” says Robert. “We just tried to accentuate that element of the situation really. The funny balance onand I think for us it’s about finding moments when you use color—here it was to express tenderness, softness, a hopefulness.”
