Dramatically outspent and out-advertised, Mastriano's banking on a political insurgency to push him over the top.

Dan Gleiter | [email protected] to conventional wisdom, Doug Mastriano should be the leader of a lost cause in this year’s Pennsylvania governor’s race.
And yet, the campaign sailed into its last weekend still outwardly optimistic that they’ve got a shot to slay Goliath on the strength of a grassroots army that’s ready for a mass action on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Consider, Shapiro right now is polling about eight percentage points better than Hilary Rodham Clinton, who was up by about 2.4 percentage points at this point in 2016, when she that year’s Pennsylvania presidential vote to former President Donald J. Trump.
“These are people who would walk over hot coals for the guy and it’s impressive, but it’s not unprecedented for this cycle,” said Charlie O’Neill, a former deputy executive director for Pennsylvania’s Republican State Committee.Just like Trump, his political patron saint, Mastriano seems to have excelled at reaching a pocket of voters that have ordinarily left politics to others.
All found something appealing from the junior state Senator from Franklin County, who used his platform on the Capitol steps to show them that they had a leader in Harrisburg who was of like mind and dedicated to their interests. “The Democrats see how important Pennsylvania is, and they’re putting their money where their mouth is,” Mastriano said in one appearance. “On our side here, I don’t really know what’s going on as far as these national groups. “Chasing dreams in Oregon and elsewhere is nice and interesting, but Pennsylvania is the energy base for our nation.”
This means, many Republican strategists say, that Mastriano’s missed key opportunities to try to grow his base, and that leaves Mastriano one of the weaker links in the GOP chain this year. Bill Bretz, chair of the Westmoreland County Republican Committee, told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last month that’s the kind of vibe he getting.
In this race, Mastriano hasn’t really been able to carry his anti-Shapiro attacks to a broader audience because of his money problems, and polling shows a big gap in how the candidates are perceived.
