The big tech money behind Shadow, the app that brought chaos to the Iowa Caucus by AngelAuYeung
Silicon Valley heavyweights make up the liberal-leaning roster of Pacronym’s backers. One supporter is billionaire Michael Moritz, a partner at Sequoia Capital, whose net worth of $4.1 billion stems from his early bets on Google, LinkedIn and PayPal. According to Federal Election Committee data, he gave $1 million to Pacronym, or 12.8% of the $7.8 million that it has raised since early 2019.
Official results for the Iowa caucuses were supposed to be reported in the early evening on Monday night. But at around 9:30 p.m. local time, only 35% of precincts had reported. Shortly after, a representative for the state party issued a statement saying it had “found inconsistencies” in caucus reporting from the app. “The underlying data and paper trail is sound,” said Mandy McClure, spokeswoman for the Iowa Democratic Party.
“We sincerely regret the delay in the reporting of the results of last night’s Iowa caucuses and the uncertainty it has caused to the candidates, their campaigns, and Democratic caucus-goers...We will apply the lessons learned in the future, and have already corrected the underlying technology issue. We take these issues very seriously, and are committed to improving and evolving to support the Democratic Party’s goal of modernizing its election processes.
A committee for Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democratic senator from New York who dropped out of the presidential race in November, paid Shadow $35,000 for fundraising consulting and software services. Joe Biden’s presidential campaign committee paid Shadow just over $1,000 for its text messaging services.
