ticked all my boxes. Rookie cops, Brian Stanhope and Francis Gleeson are also neighbours in a leafy, family-friendly suburb in upstate New York. Their children, Peter and Kate, grow up together and are best friends until a tragedy tears the two families apart but keeps them forever connected. It’s a real skill to write this kind of storyline without getting overly sentimental or mawkish and Mary Beth Keane achieves that with aplomb.
As her husband is dying, Marion sits by his hospital bedside and reflects on her life. Forty years before, bored, unfulfilled and selfish, she does something, which destroys not just her husband, Michael, but her two children, Sarah and Eddie. This might seem a difficult book at first, the narrative skips between the 70’s and the present day and different POVs, and Marion is a divisive character but it’s well worth sticking with. An atmospheric, clever novel, which will get under your skin.
, Rowan Coleman returns with a change of direction. Set at Ponden Hall near Haworth, the real-life inspiration foris a haunting piece of gothic fiction and a love story. Young widow Trudy and her son Will return to her family home where, among the ghosts, both real and imaginary, she stumbles upon a secret cache of letters, which lead her to a mystery involving Emily Bronte herself.
