Chopra Jonas is currently the star of the new Prime Video spy series Citadel, alongside Stanley Tucci and Richard Madden. She also has a movie in theaters with Love Again, costarring Outlander's Sam Heughan. The Simpsons, which started in 1989 and is currently airing season 34, focuses on numerous side characters outside the core family.
With The Simpsons becoming such an iconic show, Apu became a commonly seen, stereotypical portrayal of an Indian accent, which ultimately had a more significant effect than the show could've known. Chopra Jonas, and many people of Indian descent, found themselves constantly compared to the caricature, ultimately affecting the character's fate.
The Simpsons Controversy Surrounding Apu Apu was seen as a controversial character on The Simpsons for several reasons. The Indian character was voiced by a Caucasian actor, Hank Azaria, whose performance was that of an exaggerated stereotype. Hari Kondabolu released a documentary in 2017 called The Problem with Apu, which addressed much of what Chopra Jonas mentioned while delving into broader issues with the portrayal of the character.
