Brownstein dedicates several paragraphs yearning for Gavin Newsom to replace Joe Biden.

Wade, Biden is not likely to fill the role of the inspirational defender of an inclusive, multiracial, multicultural society.
After that quote, Brownstein ticks off reasons why Attorney General Merrick Garland and Vice President Kamala Harris aren't good candidates to fill the"inspirational defender" role he says would be best filled by Newsom. Despite the case Brownstein makes for Newsom, the California governor reiterated that he won't be running for president in 2024 even if Biden decides not to run, because he doesn't want to challenge fellow his California politician Harris .
"I don’t know how many times you can say no in ways that others don’t say no,” he told Brownstein, which probably broke his heart.
