Now in its thirty-first year, the ASCAP Film And Television Scoring Workshop has become one of the most sought after programs in Hollywood, open to only a dozen applicants from around the globe. I went behind the scenes with four of the students at this year's program.
According to Todd, many of the current applicants find out about the program from the strong word of mouth from those successful alumni.
As I mentioned, the program has been in place since 1988. In the ever-changing world of media and music there might as well have been dinosaurs roaming the Fox lot for how long ago 31 years is in the media world. Netflix was still a decade away from inception. Hulu nearly two decades. I spoke with four of the student composers -- Max Lombardo ; Harlan Hodges ; Carlos Simon and Joep Sporck -- about their month in the program.Max Lombardo: I'm from Padua, a relatively small town in northern Italy located in between Milan and Venice. But I've been based in LA for four years.
Hodges: Stick with it and continue to develop as unique of a composing voice as I can. Also, there is strength in numbers. Lombardo: This is a hard one, because we met with so many great composers. Meeting John Powell was probably the most impactful experience for me, both artistically and on a personal level. I love his work, and I was really happy to get to know him as a person, even though our encounter was brief. He was very open and honest in sharing about the experience of coming to L.A. from Europe, in showing us his process as a composer, and about the way he handles his work-life balance.
