We chat with TheAngryBlackGirlAndHerMonster stars layahayes, Chad Coleman, and Denzel Whitaker, as well as filmmaker Bomani J. Story about the most memorable moments and their approach to gore in the new Frankenstein reimagining:
The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster is a modern and heartbreaking adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, told through the eyes of a modern teenage girl named Vicaria. Director Bomani J. Story, who also wrote the script, has already had the honor of seeing his feature film debut premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival. It received an enthusiastic response and is now making its way to theaters on June 9, as well as to digital platforms on June 23.
And as far as the gore, it's important for people to look at it – in very Cronenberg fashion. It was important for me for people to see that. You don't hide from that; you’ve got to look at it. I feel like you're being disingenuous if you take a Frankenstein story, and you're not doing gore. As for the gore, it's not trying to be cute with you. It's not trying to toy with you in that way. You know what I mean? “I'm coming straight at you, and I mean business.” I don't want you to get into how cute it is; it's not. No one is unscathed. In that moment, when you see Vicaria with all that on her face, you go, "God." And yeah, people walk out of here giving a damn, because [Bomani] challenges you to care about these real people.
Now, the most excruciating scene? It’s hot in Atlanta, and we were having a day on set where you would have to turn off the A/C. There were rolling blackouts that were happening at the same time, so we were losing power. We're stuck in this hot room after being cornered by the monster; we’re trapped in the master bedroom, and we're sweating profusely. This is after screaming, yelling, and stabbing a knife through the monster's head.
Reading the script and talking to Bomani helped me see and feel everything, and that made me excited to be part of it. He does this really wonderful thing where he knows all the answers, and it feels like they're all in his head. He's just constantly challenging you and giving you new ideas to play with, but he doesn't give it all to you. He lets you, as the actor, take agency for your character to figure it out. I feel like it's so much more fun and so much more collaborative.
