East Sixth Street was once home to a robust Little India — largely composed of very similar restaurants, many bedazzled with Christmasy chile-pepper lights, and all highly competitive with each other, though they have been rumored to share the same kitchen for classics like chicken tikka masala.
The restaurants are actually mostly owned by, and of those remaining, Panna II Garden is the place to go. It’s a popular date spot for both atmosphere and an affordable set meal, which includes an appetizer, soup, main course, rice or bread, and dessert for under $23 a person. Vestiges of the competitive spirit remain on First Avenue, where staffers will try to convince passersby that their restaurant is best; regulars ignore them and go straight for their favorite.
