Warren's goal will be to “try to make the majority of the party...feel comfortable with her” tonight, strategists say, while Harris needs to “establish what she’s for” and “emphasize her personality” DemDebate
strategist. “You’ve got to be careful, but there’s a way to do that without being overly negative. That could also help her with electability. Electability is a very real thing, but it’s hard to define because it’s more of an emotional response to a candidate. You make yourself electable by convincing people instead of by making a case, which is not quite the same thing.
Harris, at this point, would like to have Warren’s problems. The temptation for the California senator is to try to reignite interest by crafting another headline-grabbing viral “moment,” as Harris did at the first debate, in June, by aiming her “that little girl was me” zinger at Biden. “But that was a sugar high—her numbers went up for a moment and then back down,” a veteran Democratic operative says.
Thursday’s smaller debate field should provide Warren and Harris ample time and space to make their pitches. Perhaps at the end of the three hours their trend lines will continue unchanged. The laws of political gravity and media narrative, though, practically dictate that Warren is due for a dip, and Harris for a revival.
