Two of Kathy Kennedy's quilts made it into the International Quilt Festival taking place this fall in Houston.
PUBLISHED 9:00 AM CDT Jun. 10, 2023AUSTIN, Texas — Kathy Kennedy spends a lot of time in her flower garden. It's located right behind her home near Llano, Texas. She always has her camera ready to capture the beautiful blooms. She turns those flower photos into handmade quilts.
"It's your creation, your own design, and it's a piece of art that hangs on the wall. When my daughter was little, I made a quilt on my sewing machine. I didn't have any clue what I was doing. After I got finished, I thought, 'That was awful! I'll do this when I'm older and I have more time,'" she said.. She creates the design using a piece of artwork or photos of flowers from her garden.
"You're creating a design with different pieces of fabric just like you would with a paper collage, and you glue them or stitch them into your design. I'm really a beginner. I'm just trying to figure out what I'm doing. But I'm really having a good time doing it," said Kennedy. Two of Kennedy's quilts made it into the International Quilt Festival taking place this fall in Houston. Kennedy says creating quilts gives her a sense of accomplishment, whether they're on display at a big event or simply hanging on the wall at home for friends and family to enjoy.
