Pieces are fitting together better this season, starting with point guard Tyrese Hunter
Texas guard Marcus Carr celebrates a score against Gonzaga during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game, Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022, in Austin, Texas. AUSTIN — Marcus Carr lost track of how many times Texas coach Chris Beard made them rewatch the footage of last year’s loss to Gonzaga. But late Wednesday night, with that defeat avenged and the game tape mercifully retired from the rotation, the senior guard could finally crack a smile over the whole ordeal.
More laughter followed. And why not? After all, the tape from Wednesday’s game should be a far more enjoyable viewing experience for Carr and Co.at the Moody Center. It was a stunning reversal of what happened last November in Spokane, Washington, when Bulldog star center Drew Timme had his way with the Longhorns in an 86-74 win that wasn’t quite as close as the final score indicated.
The lone knock on Hunter's game following a Big 12 freshman of year campaign at Iowa State was his outside shooting. Well, Hunter threw in five 3s from all over the court against Gonzaga. Contested pull-ups, step backs, catch-and-shoot — you name it. He finished with a career-high 26 points on 9-for-14 shooting and defended Gonzaga’s guards at a high level all night.
Carr isn’t always burdened with handling the ball and initiating the offense, a role that took its toll on him a year ago. He’s got more energy to play the sort of defense Beard demands while still scoring in bunches and creating good looks in transition.
