Eighteen-year-old Jose Luis Ramirez Jr., a senior at Belton High School in Belton, Texas, has died after being stabbed on campus Tuesday morning, police said.

Caysen Tyler Allison, 18, of Temple, is accused of stabbing Ramirez and was taken into custody. The two were classmates at Belton.

Belton police responded to a call about the stabbing around 9:47 a.m. on May 3. The school was placed on lockdown, but Allison had fled the school and left the area. Police located him and took him into custody around 10:09 a.m. Ramirez was taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center but was confirmed dead at 6:51 p.m. Tuesday evening.

“I am so sorry to have to provide this update,” said Belton Police Chief Gene Ellis. “My prayers are with the family and the entire Belton High School community.”“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident at Belton High School today and send my prayers to all of those who have been impacted by it, particularly to the young victim and his family,” said Belton Mayor Wayne Carpenter.

Students and staff were released from school around noon following the lockdown. Allison was booked into Bell County Jail on a felony charge. Belton is located along the Interstate 35 corridor, between Austin and Waco.
