To get back to the Women's College World Series, Texas will first have to get through Texas A&M, Texas State and Seton Hall in this weekend's Austin Regional at McCombs Field.
Texas second baseman Leighann Goode competes against McNeese during an NCAA softball game on Saturday, March 4, 2023, in Austin, Texas. AUSTIN — Count Texas coach Mike White among those left puzzled by some of the NCAA softball committee’s seeding decisions for this year’s tournament, which begins Friday.
Like White implied, that initial Selection Sunday shock wore off quick. No time to dwell on the immutable with three quality teams coming to town for this weekend’s double elimination Austin Regional. “We’ve been through a little bit of an up-and-down season, that’s for sure,” White said. “We’ve had some really good wins and some really disappointing losses. We are still trying to find our consistency, I suppose, but we have the pieces in place, I believe, to make a pretty good run.”
Sophomore outfielder Mia Scott and redshirt freshman outfielder Asthon Maloney are both hitting .390, two of five Longhorns batting above .340 on the year. And the freshman have provided good pop at the plate, with catcher/first baseman Reese Atwood and second baseman and O'Connor graduate Leighann Goode combining for 19 home runs, 21 doubles and 81 runs batted in.
