Texas has removed thousands of people from Medicaid rolls after a pandemic moratorium on such removals ended. Contributor Victoria Eardley writes that this is an effort to "right size" the program, not target vulnerable populations. If that doesn’t sound familiar, it’s because state and national commentators are saying the opposite. The federal ban on removing ineligible people expired in April, and since then, Texas has been rushing to “right-size” Medicaid. The state has identified people who are most likely to be ineligible, based on tax returns and other data like employer and wage records. To date, more than 925,000 people have had their eligibility reviewed. Only about 243,000 have proven they meet Medicaid’s requirements, with roughly another 67,000 still pending.
