Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott is being blamed for bungling the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops to the border. “I’ve never seen the magnitude of problems of Operation Lone Star.”

Earlier in the month, Texas Democrats in Congress asked the Texas Military Department to investigate treatment of service members under the mission.

“I’ve never seen the magnitude of problems of Operation Lone Star,” said Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Jason Featherston, who previously served as the senior adviser to the Texas Army National Guard and has been speaking out against the operation in recent weeks. The Texas Military Department has said that the mission didn’t have the same planning and preparation time of overseas deployments and that the department had to act quickly on Mr. Abbott’s emergency order.

The deployment’s size has been rivaled only by the response to Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Col. Holton said. However, Guard members spent 40 to 90 days responding to the aftermath of the hurricane, while many can expect to be on the border as long as a year. Some had only a couple of days to mobilize, they said, leaving behind children and civilian careers.

While such deaths are always a concern, they cannot be directly tied to the mission, Col. Holton said.
