Texas A&M must shed light on journalism professor debacle | Opinion

A full and public accounting of what transpired during those seven weeks is necessary and important for the public, faculty and students of Texas A&M and must be done sooner than later.

Just bits and pieces have been reported throughout Texas media outlets and so many serious questions remain.McElroy, a Black woman originally from Houston, was heralded as the new leader of Texas A&M’s journalism department June 13 in a public signing ceremony complete with maroon, white and silver balloons. At the time, McElroy said she looked forward to “being part of something transformative.

By mid-July, McElroy’s hiring had fallen apart. Originally offered a tenure track position, McElroy, a tenured journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin, was offered instead a one-year contract. She understandably walked away.Meanwhile the breakdown in the negotiations to bring her on board triggered a series of high-profile resignations, most prominently that of university President M. Katherine Banks on July 20, and a lot of justified outside criticism.

We look forward to a well-documented and thorough investigation from which the university can learn how to avoid such a mess in the future.
