Keep in mind that large oak trees do not create an ideal habitat for turfgrass. Yet, for the most part, Houston-area homeowners refuse to accept this because it is not the answer they want to hear. We have an aesthetic in mind, and allowing grass to die underneath our trees rarely fits that image of a lovely landscape. However, I’d challenge homeowners to embrace the conditions and beauty that larger oak trees provide.
While you can have a professional aborist thin and raise branches to allow more sunlight, be careful not to thin the canopy too much. Q: Can you identify this weed and how to kill it? It took over bare spots in a St. Augustine lawn and is spreading.Non-chemical control involves proper lawn maintenance. A healthy, thick lawn can prevent its introduction with regular mowing and proper fertilization. Hand-pull entire root when possible. Do not over water lawn, which prevents grass from developing a deeper root system and creates thinning and opportunity for weeds.
