The Texans have signed former Colts defensive tackle Byron Cowart. The franchise announced the move Thursday, along with their signing of cornerback Shaquill Griffin. They released tight end Eric Tomlinson and placed defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth on the injured reserve.
Cowart, a 2019 fifth-round pick by the Patriots, reunites with Texans general manager Nick Caserio, who was New England’s director of player personnel during Cowart’s two seasons there. Cowart started in 14 games during the 2020 season and logged 27 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. The Colts claimed Cowart when the Patriots waived him after missing the entire 2021 season with an undisclosed injury.
Cowart completed his rookie contract with the Colts as a rotational defensive tackle. He played in all 17 games and recorded 12 tackles and two tackles for loss while logging 20 percent of the defense’s total snaps. He signed a one-year, $1.08 million contract with the Chiefs on March 24, and the Chiefs, who drafted Texas defensive tackle Keondre Coburn in the sixth round, released Cowart on May 10.
The Texans now have eight defensive tackles under contract. Caserio and newly hired coach DeMeco Ryans have emphasized improving a defensive front that surrendered the most rushing yards in team history last season. Cowart now joins Sheldon Rankin and Hassan Ridgeway as the third veteran defensive tackle to sign with the team this offseason.
